Community Development Finance Institutions

The Overlooked Funding Route

What is a CDFI?

Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs) are specialist, mission-driven lenders that provide finance to businesses which mainstream banks and traditional lenders typically turn away. These often include businesses recovering from a period of financial distress.

CDFIs assess applications on the real, underlying viability of a business, not just a credit score or a standard risk-scoring model.

For a business carrying stacked short-term debt, this makes CDFIs a genuinely realistic route to longer-term, lower-cost refinancing — provided the application is put together properly.

Why Most Brokers Ignore This Market

Traditional commercial finance brokers largely overlook the CDFI sector. The reasons are simple:

  • Lower commission margins compared with mainstream or high-cost lending
  • More detailed, paper-heavy application processes
  • Reluctance to work with distressed debt profiles, which take more time and care to present properly
  • Requirement for integrated financial forecasts

This is often your solution: A funding market that exists specifically to help businesses in your position, which very few brokers are equipped or willing to access on your behalf.

How Strata Identifies the Right Funder

Not every CDFI lends to every sector, region, or debt profile. Part of our specialism is knowing this market in detail. We match each business to the funders most likely to say yes, based on factors including:

  • Sector and geographic lending criteria
  • Loan size, term, and purpose
  • The nature and history of existing debt
  • The strength of the supporting forecasts and business case

This targeted approach means proposals go to the right funders first time, rather than being “scatter gunned” across the market.

Faster Applications Through Automation

CDFI application forms are notoriously detailed — often the single biggest barrier for businesses trying to apply directly, and the main reason mainstream brokers avoid this market.

Strata work with professionals with CDFI backgrounds together with the capability to automate much of the completion of CDFI application forms, using the financial and business data you supply. This means:

  • Significantly less time spent by you re-entering the same information across multiple forms
  • Fewer errors and inconsistencies between forms
  • Faster turnaround from initial review to submission
  • More capacity for us to focus on the parts of the application that need real judgement - the narrative, the forecasts, and the funder match

From Application to Approval

Once a CDFI is identified, we prepare and submit a complete funding proposal, supported by integrated financial forecasts that demonstrate serviceability of the new debt structure.
